Economic study author plans free talks at OCCC campuses
Onno Husing to present free workshops
in Lincoln City and Newport on Dec. 9
Lincoln County residents and business owners are invited to learn the latest information about the county’s economy from a local expert at two sessions on Tuesday, Dec. 9. Onno Husing, one of the authors of an exhaustive study of a 10-year update on the state of Lincoln County’s economy, will summarize the report’s findings at the Lincoln City and Newport campuses of Oregon Coast Community College.
Husing’s presentation will begin at 2 p.m. at the Patrick O’Connor Community Room at the Newport OCCC Campus and at 6:30 p.m. in the Community Room of the Lincoln City OCCC Center.
Onno Husing has been the Director of the Lincoln County Planning and Development Department for the last two and a half years. Husing participated in a year-long effort to update a profile of Lincoln County's economy, working with the Corvallis consulting firm The Research Group.
Before joining the Planning Department, for fifteen years Onno Husing served as the Director of the Oregon Coastal Zone Management Association (OCZMA). In that capacity Husing was involved in economic development initiatives that impacted the entire Oregon Coast.
Husing, who holds masters degrees in anthropology, city and regional planning, as well as a law degree from the University of Oregon, will describe how the Lincoln County economic study was developed. In addition, he will highlight some of the most important findings of the study. The purpose of Husing's presentation, though, is to gather feedback from the business community in Lincoln County about this economic study.
"Look, each of us has a unique vantage point on the economy,” Husing said. “We need to share the study and gather the insights people have about this compelling information. We need to figure out, together, what this study is telling us about the past, present, and future of our county. This the most important phase of the study; the feedback stage."
Dave Price, director of the Small Business Development Center at Oregon Coast Community College, said the study has been eye-opening for many in Lincoln County.
“This economic study presents the stark differences between the communities that comprise Lincoln County,” Price said. “Understanding these differences, and the unique abilities and assets of each of our communities, is key to making real progress in economic and civic development moving forward.”
Oregon Coast Community College’s Newport campus is located at 400 SE College Way in South Beach. The Lincoln City center is located at 3788 SE High School Drive. For more details, visit www.oregoncoastcc.org or call 541-994-4166.
